Character or Behavior? You Tell Me.....

    Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Hi Everyone!!!!  Well, I'm gonna try to be back.  But like my tag line says, I'm back with a vengenace!

I recently had an adventure that I would like your take on.  Let's see if I am so totally abnormal that I should hide or maybe just repent.

I have a coworker that just really out does herself to spite me every chance she gets.  Without going into great detail, let me just give you a quick setup.  She works the shift before me.  What she does or doesn't do greatly effects what I have to do in order to handle my responsibilities on my shift.  For the last few months this woman [ I refrain from calling her a lady because she isn't] has deliberately done things to make my job as hard as she can.  I had kept my mouth shut about it for a long time, but finally decided that she had enough fun and that I was going to push her buttons as much as she does mine.

A couple of days ago, I had a situation with her that I just couldn't let pass without comment.  She had seemed to really have outdone herself.  So before she walked out the door I decided to thank her.  My exact words were, "I would personally like to thank you for being a bitch today."  Naturally she replied, "You're one every day."  I said, "Thanks!  It's nice to know that I can still keep up with the Jones'."

The next day I had a voice mail for me to come to work 30 minutes early.  I was waiting for this.  You see, my work area has about 40 cameras and 3 microphones.  I  know this.  And because of this I planned carefully what I said, in the hopes that someone would request to view the tapes and see exactly what happened and why.  My boss seems to think this other woman can do no wrong if you know what I mean.  I expected this woman to cause some stink about what I said.  I have tried to discuss my interactions with this woman to my boss, whom doesn't want to deal with it.  But now since someone goes and tattle tails, she has too deal with it.

Anyway, I get to work and find that I got wrote up for calling this woman a profane name.  We argued about it for about 5 minutes.  I said I didn't call her a bitch and she said that I did.  I quoted what I said verbatim and my boss says it's the same thing.

Now it's your turn to decide.  Did I call her a bitch?  I don't think so.  I didn't say, "So and so, you're a bitch!"  I was referring to her behavior not her character even though most days they are one and the same.

So tell me, do I repent?  I think not!!

I hate to be the lone dissenting voice, especially since you are such a good friend... but what kind of friend would I be if I was less than honest.
When I worked for the provincial government a coworker was retiring, so on their last friday close to end of shift we got a six-pack and toasted the guy... one beer each so considering the circumstances hardly anything earthshattering.  Unfortunatly the bosses aid was a brown-noser eager for advancement so found the empties and showed the boss, reported us for drinking on the job and we got written up too.  The union got all involved, told us not to admit our drinking suggesting we pose the theory we could've just picked them up as litter from the parking lot... and poof we're snow white.   Well I'm sorry but even to save my skin i don't like to those close to me i'll be damned if i'm starting now with a total stranger - someone i really couldn't care less what they think of me and i didn't like anyhow... I drank knowing what i was doing and right from wrong and should accept full responsibility irregardless of everything.
So, in your case it all rides on whether you fully intended to call her a bitch and indeed said so.   If you didn't well i'd be fighting it tooth and nail... but if you did call her a bitch (used a profinatity in regards to another individual) irregardless of everything you were wrong and the nature of the comment isn't debatable.  If you're not allowed to be profane/use profanities in the workplace (if the public and workplace is supposed to treated with a certain regard that cursing in public is prohibited) and say someones a bitch/word you can't use = that by definition is wrong.  Hell i'd be glad for it and i'd take that note in my file LOL, you wanna put the fact she's a bitch on file wtf do i care.  In my case I downed a beer at work, if some small mind wants to be as weak as to turn that into an issue they just aren't big enough to deal with... screw em.  If I called someone bitch it's cause i meant it, I got my point across - so wouldn't be looking for technicalities or loopholes.  If I did what i was accused of with full knowledge and intent I'd see that honest intent all the way through.
Sad fact is though in the reply "you are everyday" she didn't actually, by law and definition use the word, ie "call" you a bitch.

PS - good on ya if you did lol... i love it.  Take care my friend.

I agree with Sexy and Princess....she did call you a bad name and referred to her behavior...big difference.  YOur boss needs some more compassionate training and resource management training, especially if your coworker did not get in trouble for actually referring to you as a bitch!

Hi Bekke * waves *  Just popping by to wish you a fantastic weekend....I got me a busy one coming up...catch up time for some one one ones with friends and family.  They seem to think I have disappeared off the face of the earth as well....lol

Well, Sexy does have a very good point. Why did the other woman in question not get the same treatment as you, when in actuality, she did point blank call you a bitch. Some people...I swear!!

Technically no, you didnt call her a bitch.  I argue this same thing all the time with my old man.  He says I call him an ass when really all I say is your acting like an ass.  Big difference.  But my question is why didn't she get written up for the same thing?  She said your a bitch every day.
